Abstract

The aims of tills study were to investigate the reliability of a Korean version of Jaw Functional Limitation Scale (JFLS) in TMD patients, to evaluate the limitation of the Jaw function in TMD patients using JFLS, and to identify the factors associated with the limitations in the Jaw function Twenty-one items of the JFLS questionnaire representing the domains of mastication, opening, verbal and emotional expression, and global jaw limitation were administered to 56 TMD patients, and age-and gender-matched 55 control subjects without any TMD symptoms. The subjects were also asked to quantify the intensity of their pain related to TMD The internal consistency using Cronbach¢¥s alpha and the test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient, ICC) of a Korean version of JFLS in TMD patients were also evaluated The internal consistency reliability of each domain was 0.88 (mastication), 0.79 (opening), 0.95 (verbal and emotional expression), and 0.78 (global Jaw limitation) using the Cronbach¢¥s alpha coefficient of the average inter-item correlation. Test-retest reliability for each domain of mastication, opening, verbal and emotional expression, and global Jaw limitation was 086, 084, 081, and 087, respectively Among each domain of the JFLS, mastication score was the highest followed by opening, and global Jaw limitation scores. The domain of verbal and emotional expression had the lowest score 10 TMD patients. Multiple lmear regressIon analyses revealed that mastication, and global Jaw limitations were highly affected by presence of TMD symptoms and pam intensity. In the domains of mouth opening, and verbal and emotional expression, the limitation was affected by presence of TMD symptoms but was not affected by pam intensity Gender and age variables ¾ßd not significantly affect any domains of JFLS
